🧑‍🌾 Greenthumbs: Who we are and what we do

The Greenthumbs team is a resident led working group of passionate gardeners and nature lovers of all experience levels and backgrounds.

We understand that the gardens are shared responsibility and like Nightingale, we appreciate that plants need more than just water and sunshine, they also need regular maintenance and nourishment. We aim to work alongside the garden caretakers to sustain and grow our building’s beautiful green spaces for the whole community to enjoy. We also just generally enjoy getting out in the sunshine, catching up with neighbours and getting our hands a little dirty!

If you would like to get involved, please reach out and follow along on the Greenthumbs Discord channel. Upcoming meetings and events will also be communicated on the Discord channel.

🌿Green Thumbs WWB Garden Objectives

  1. Maintain a strong focus on diverse, layered Australian native planting to contribute to local biodiversity and increase urban habitat for birds and insects.
  2. Respect the Openwork planting vision of four unique rooftop garden areas representing the four communities that make up our building.
  3. Contribute to Brunswick urban revegetation and greening by encouraging generous planting on balconies, set-back levels and ground level planters.
  4. Promote natural cooling of the building and surrounds by encouraging climbers on building walls and over the pedestrian colonnades.
  5. Employ sustainable pest and disease control measures through encouraging companion planting and organic and natural pest control methods where possible.
  6. Maintain healthy and productive soils using organic compost, fertilisers and mulch.
  7. Use collected rainwater where possible in garden irrigation and watering.
  8. Ensure green waste is composted by onsite worm farms or offsite at the Veolia organics processing facility through the city council’s FOGO bin program.
  9. Encourage community interest, ownership and engagement in the gardens.
  10. Provide residents with knowledge and resources to assist in maintaining their own apartment plants and balcony gardens.
